Icehotel

Australian designer and photographer Daniel Rosenbaum has enjoyed success in the International art scene due to the extraordinary sculptures and conceptual interiors that he has created while working as an interior designer, artist and sculptor at the world renowned Icehotel in Sweden. Using chainsaws, chisels and a variety of ice carving tools, Daniel has hand sculpted some of the most unique interiors that Icehotel has exhibited in its seventeen-year history. Daniels ‘ice art’ has received enormous international acclaim largely due to the number of journalists that visit the Icehotel each year. Daniels designs have been extensively reviewed in art and design journals as well as featured in TV documentaries produced by National Geographic, Discovery Channel and ABC television.

Each year a group of international artists and designers are commissioned to design and build the Icehotel interior which in includes spaces such as, igloos, bedroom suites, luxury suites, an ice church, ice bar, lobby & reception, ice art exhibition space and sometimes an ice theatre that seats up to 300 people. At the end of winter the entire hotel melts away with the return of summer and an entirely new Icehotel is built the following year. Due to the unique ephemeral concept and high standard of art and design, the Icehotel receives over 14000 day visitors each year and is now one of Sweden's most famous architectural structures.

Rosenbaum’s Ice art tends towards the organic, his work often draws inspiration from concepts that express a deeper awareness of the properties of nature. In his 2006 bedroom suite (titled: Change of State) the cycle of water is traced as it moves from solid to liquid to gas - one end of this room is filled by gigantic snowballs, representing gaseous water vapour molecules as they rise into the atmosphere. Another noteworthy project was Daniels involvement with the construction of a fully functional Ice Pipe Organ designed by American Ice Artist Tim Linhart and built over a two-month period in 2004, together with Rosenbaum.

In 2001 Rosenbaum graduated with distinction from a Bachelor of Design degree at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney. His success as a student was demonstrated on many occasions and his final year design project (an underground island holiday house) was selected for a national graduate exhibition representing design excellence from universities around Australia.

Daniel now works on a limited selection of Art & Design commissions each year as well as occasional guest lecturing at Universities in Sweden and Australia. While Ice and snow are preferred sculpting materials, he also works with materials including ceramics, timber, stone and concrete.

Photography

Due to the importance of recording work-in-progress and documenting finished projects, photography has always been a fundamental part of Daniel’s Art & Design practice. His images are rich in colour, dynamic in texture, but often abstract, showing ambiguously cropped landscapes that require a ‘closer look’ to understand what the subject matter actually is. One the primary goals of Daniel's photography is to get people to take a closer look at the everyday beauty that surrounds us. Photography is also a form of meditation for Daniel, an opportunity to be intensely focused in the present moment.
