Ghee Beom Kim uses his background in mathematics and industrial design to create real structures from maths and geometry. Expressed in 3-dimensional visual manifestations, his striking digital art is printed on to archival canvas and can be commissioned to any size or colour specification.
Gee Beom Kim has been selected for the prestigious Churchie national emerging art exhibition which aims to recognise, expose and promote emerging artists in both the public and commercial arenas, showing some of the finest work produced by emerging artists.
“The pure mathematical, visual delight of lines, curves and surfaces”
"Ghee successfully draws upon the rich history of optical illusions, regular tiling, and more contemporary fractal geometry to challenge our notions of depth. Are these images really the result of rendering 3D models or cunning 2D images that invoke a 3D interpretation?"
- Paul Bourke
Senior Visualisation Fellow at University of Western Australia.
"I am enthralled by the loose and oh so intricately 'woven' symmetry and architecture. I feel myself able to envision moving toward and going right past the outer forms through the interstices and exploring its innards. I can imagine it having interiority. Very alluring...
Ghee's art shows the indebtedness and gratitude to such prior artists and geometers like Mandelbrot and Escher, who like Cezanne in the Modern period of art history, fathered an entire new generation of artists and graphic designers."
- Norman Shapiro M.A.
Artist and lecturer based in New York.
Artist Statement
My earliest exposure to geometric art goes back to nearly 30 years, when I was given an assignment to create an art work using a compass at school. The result was something that I had never anticipated. It showed me an absolute order and quintessence of a form. My first geometric work left indelible mark in my psyche. In the course of my life I find myself continuously going back to that moment of serendipity.
My art work is the result of my journey in search of absolute beauty and truth, which in some way shares the similar notion as Islamic geometric art, where faith is expressed and divinity is visualised via complex geometric patterns. I do believe that one of the disciplines that facilitate the understanding of the universe and its Creator is mathematics and out of it comes its visual manifestation: Geometry.
One artist whose artistic and mathematical spirit I can strongly identify with is M.C.Escher. I share the same enthusiasm toward geometry and patterns. While his representative work revolves around illusions and tessellations, mine is more to do with creating real structures and surfaces that have striking visual appeal.
I am an aesthetic explorer in pursue of new spatial order through geometry. It gives me means to seek out ultimate beauty that does not fade away with passing of time. Most of the work I have produced is the result of that very journey. Along the way I see Creator, Genesis, and constellations in my work. I want people to share sheer joy of mathematical or geometric art through my work.
Because of my strong background in product design, the initial concept is sketched onto a piece of paper and translated to Autocad which I find very useful in maintaining accuracy of my designs, which are geometric in nature. Once a desired outcome is reached in the form of wire frame, the design is then moved to Photoshop where it is touched up according to my whim. Doing it all manually means very painstaking repetitive work with far inferior result. All works are photographic inkjetprints on canvas limited editioned series of 10.
