Born in north Queensland, I have worked professionally in ceramics for over 18 years and currently work from my home based studio in the rainforest in Kuranda. Textures and patterns in nature influence my work often drawn from the surrounding tropical environment.

My porcelain work evolves intuitively from explorations of the material and the making processes. My passion for the inherent visual and tactile qualities of porcelain guides the development my work. Porcelains unique qualities of fineness, density, whiteness, purity and translucency are explored in a variety of forms. Porcelain is a daunting material to use and control and I have explored its limits of tolerance in search of maximum translucency. My making methods include wheel throwing, hand building and working with fine slabs. The fine grain and purity demand a precise treatment with attention to detail often resulting in working on an intimate scale.

The purity and fineness of porcelain is an ideal base for adding colour, introducing colour into the structure of the form not just onto the surface. Ancient agateware techniques are used with layering and inlays evoking layers in land or landscape. In my wheel thrown work, I have been engaged with the process of introducing coloured clay pieces at different stages of the throwing process, each recording a different momentum. The pieces show a visual energy that records the making process.

Translucency is another quality of the material that I have explored in my work. Forms are pushed to the limits of thinness and firing temperature to increase the qualities of luminosity and fragility. The quality of luminosity and the play of pattern and light between interior and exterior are concerns of this work. I choose to leave the pieces unglazed to keep the clarity of colour and pattern. Extensive polishing enhances the tactile quality to that similar to polished stone.
