Born in Melbourne Rebecca now lives and works in Hobart, Tasmania. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, receiving first class honours, in 2003 and in 2007 was awarded a Master of Fine Art (Research Higher Degree) from the Tasmanian School of Art, University of Tasmania. In 2004 Rebecca received the CAST Craft Mentorship and an Arts Tasmanian grant to train in the kiln techniques of glass fusing, a technique she continues to explore and develop in a sculptural way. Her practice crosses the boundaries between art\craft and design to produce sculptures, lights, architectural installations and large-scale public art commissions. Recent awards include the 2007 ‘Moorilla Scholarship’, the 2007 ‘Peoples Choice Award’ at the City of Hobart Art Prize and an Australian Postgraduate Award. Rebecca’s work is held in numerous private collections worldwide.
Artist Statement
Conceptually my work is grounded in modernist architecture, predominately the critique and interpretation of the modernist glass façade. I have both a questioning of, and admiration for the glass façades of influential modernist architect Mies van de Rohe, whose concept of a skin and bone architecture revolutionised our modern cityscapes. My sculptural works consider the glass and steel used to build these high-rise buildings, raising questions in regard to the stability and sense of security they represent.
In recent years I have been developing a visual language between
kiln-formed glass and stainless steel. By creating a slot in the glass during the firing process for the stainless steel to enter and hold the glass I have been able to make works which lift the flat modernist glass façade into three dimensions. The addition of light brings these forms to life as the architectural grid of glass and steel, once contained, is now shifting as the glass appears airborne and fleeting.
